Some five years after its development was first revealed by Embraer, the KG-390 tanker/transport aircraft is soon to enter the detailed design and certification phase, ahead of its planned maiden flight in 2014.Designed to be a relatively low-cost but capable, medium-lift, fixed-wing airlifter, the KC-390 has already signed up Brazil as its launch customer and has received stated intentions to order from Chile, Colombia, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Argentina (in that order). Embraer has high hopes that the KC-390 will acquire a large portion of a market amounting to approximately 700 aircraft in 77 countries and provide competition to the ubiquitous Lockheed Martin C-l 30 Hercules.
