In the space of a few decades, and under the constant threat of war with the North, Seoul defied received wisdom by successfully building a high-tech economy from a no-tech base. The fruits of this experiment are a clutch of electronics companies that have leapfrogged their Japanese competitors; car manufacturers that are globally competitive; and shipbuilders that rival China's as the most productive in the world.
