US government officials have for the first time publicly acknowledged the use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) for the targeted killing of suspected Al-Qaeda members. The revelation came as US President Barack Obama's administration, which by most accounts has ratcheted up the strike programme begun during George W Bush's presidency, is seeking to be more transparent about the controversial counter-terrorism practice. John Brennan, the White House's top counter-terrorism adviser, provided details defending the ethics and legality of the programme during a 30 April briefing in Washington, DC.
