The performance of MBDA's Dual-Mode Brimstone (DMB) precision-guided missile stands out as one of the biggest plus points to emerge from recent UK Royal Air Force (RAF) operations in Afghanistan and Libya. An adaptation of the in-service Brimstone anti-armour weapon - with the existing millimetric wave (mmW)-seeker now being complemented by a semi-active laser (SAL) capability and an associated software update - DMB was rushed into service in late 2008 to meet an urgent operational requirement (UOR) for a low-collateral-damage weapon to defeat a wide range of static and moving targets under restrictive rules of engagement.
