State-owed PT Pal Indonesia is to undertake a number of major naval shipbuilding programmes and consolidate its position at the forefront of Jakarta's efforts to create an independent defence industry.PT Pal President Director Firmansyah Arifin told IHS Jane's that the next few years pose a number of challenges for the company - as it builds a submarine and a frigate in collaboration with foreign prime contractors - but that PT Pal is committed to becoming one of the world's largest shipbuilders."[We] understand that there are challenges ahead to become a better world-class shipyard," he said. "But we are bidding to move ahead, to produce vessels that meet international standards and to become the pride of our nation."
