The Pentagon's counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) component has identified gaps that could be filled with unmanned systems for pre-detona-tion, counter-threat network, detection and counter-device capabilities, according to Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) officials. Dr Hatcher Tynes, a contractor who leads development efforts for JIEDDO, urged industry to develop systems that could plug those capability gaps during a briefing at the annual Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) 2012 conference. Pre-detonation is one of JIEDDO's top priorities for system development and there are a variety of ways that unmanned systems could be of use, he said.
