The US Army Reserve is working to maintain its position as an 'operational' force through a phased readiness model and regionally aligned units, according to the component's new chief. Deployment demands to meet force requirements in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade have forced the military to lean heavily on troops from its Reserve component and the National Guard. The challenge at that time had been to operationalise a 'strategic' reserve in a short timeframe, but now the challenge is expected to be maintaining the Reserve as an operational force with limited funding.
