摘要

The first of an additional 4,000 African Union (AU) troops could deploy to Somalia in March pending the resolution of financing and logistic concerns, senior UN officials said on 26 January. The timeline was established by the UN special envoy to Somalia, Augustin Mahiga, during a press conference in Nairobi, which emphasised the need for the current transitional government - Somalia's 15th in 20 years - to suspend its work by 20 August. Mahiga did not comment on what was likely to replace it. About 8,000 troops from Burundi and Uganda are trying to maintain stability and security in the capital, as well as protect the government from the Al-Qaeda-linked Shabab movement. Their reinforcement was endorsed in a late December vote by the UN Security Council as part of its most recent initiative to help Somalia rebuild after the fall of Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
