Europe's financial crisis demands "deep thinking" about the future of its defence sector and the possibilities for pooling and sharing military capabilities across the 27 EU nations, Belgian Defence Minister Pieter De Crem has said. "There are serious budgetary restrictions across the member states and defence is often the first victim of cuts. We need to think deeply about the future of our defence sector and where we could take pooling and sharing as a concept," De Crem told a 25 January meeting of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Defence and Security in Brussels. The pooling/sharing idea surfaced as a central topic of discussion during an informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Ghent in September 2010.
