The Tunisian military, which aided January's popular revolution, is tiny and prides itself on its professionalism. It is also one of the few armed forces in the Middle East and North Africa kept at a distance by its civilian government rather than being used to sustain it against internal dissent. This fact may have made the Tunisian military's crucial decision to protect unarmed civilian protesters an exception in the wave of protests that are rolling across the region. In the second week of January Tunisia's armed forces, spearheaded by army chief-of-staff General Rachid Ammar, deployed to protect civilian protesters from the police and paramilitary troops, who were firing on them.
