The future of US military and economic aid for Egypt is under review as the outcome of the popular uprising there and the military's role in any transition remains uncertain. US President Barack Obama said he told beleaguered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on 1 February that "an orderly transition must be meaningful, it must be peaceful and it must begin now". The Obama administration has said it is closely monitoring the situation and will consider the conduct of all parties during and after the protests as it reviews its sizeable financial assistance to Egypt.
