Each of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) six Collins-class submarines spent between five and 12 months of the year up until June in dock undergoing or awaiting repairs or maintenance, according to figures supplied on notice to opposition defence spokesman David Johnstone on 9 February. On average, the figures show that the trouble-prone Collins fleet was seaworthy for only 32 per cent of the July 2009-June 2010 financial year because of faulty engines, broken generators, crew shortages and maintenance. In the first half of the year, only one submarine was available for the full period, with a second becoming seaworthy for the last two months.
