Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have refuted a series of media reports that Saudi main battle tanks were seen in the streets of the restive Bahraini capital to assist in the putting down of a pro-reform movement in the Gulf state. The denials by the Gulf Cooperation Council neighbours were corroborated by an international diplomat in remarks to Jane's on 1 March. Bahrain's information ministry released a statement on 1 March saying that the tanks that had been identified in the news reports as crossing the border late on 28 February were "Bahraini tanks returning from Kuwait National Day celebrations, where military from several Allied countries participated in an event commemorating Kuwait's liberation in 1991", the statement said.
