Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced on 7 March that it planned to cut the number of service personnel by 9,200 this year.The cutbacks are part of President Ma Ying-jeou's plan to reduce the size of the island's armed forces by more than 60,000, or 20 per cent, within the next three years. The current number of personnel stands at 275,000. Taiwan hopes to have an all-volunteer armed forces by 2014.
