The UN Security Council opened discussions on 10 March over the continuing crisis in Somalia, where a long-awaited government offensive against the extremist insurgent Shabab movement has earned some victories despite a mounting death toll among its soldiers and African Union peacekeepers. "Dozens of brave peacekeepers... made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon told the Council.Senior African Union Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) officials speaking to reporters in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on 5 March, highlighted some of the successes of the ongoing offensive, including the capture of the former defence ministry complex that had been a major Shabab base.
