At least five people were killed by security forces during protests in the tribal enclave of Daara in southern Syria on 23 March as demonstrations escalated against the 11-year regime of Basharal Assad. The protests, which are the latest in a wave sweeping the Middle East and North Africa, began on 18 March in Daraa, about 100 km to the south of the capital Damascus.
