With the capture of two western towns on 29 March and the administrative capital Yamoussoukro on 30 March, forces loyal to the internationally recognised President Alassane Ouattara appear to have gained the upper hand in the battle for control of Cote d'lvoire. Comprised predominantly of elements of the former rebel New Forces, who remained in control of the northern half of the country after the end of the 2003 civil war, the newly created Republican Forces of Ivory Coast (FRCI) have made a series of strategic wins and have advanced toward the country's main city, Abidjan, after their capture of Yamoussoukro.
