In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeast Japan on 11 March, which triggered subsequent radiation leaks from the Fukushima nuclear power complex in the biggest catastrophe Japan has faced in its post-war history, one might ask whether the aerospace, defence and security sector should be tasked with meeting the security challenges of a far wider remit: a remit that encompasses the protection of people and infrastructures including towns, cities and regions from natural as well as man-made threats.
