The US Department of Defense's (DoD's) principal director for East Asia policy said on 13 April that US arms sales to Taiwan would not be influenced by concerns that China could suspend military ties with the US. Addressing the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, David Helvey said the Obama administration "understands China's opposition, but remains committed to the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act" that commits Washington to providing the island with "the means of self-defence".
