UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Euroflghter Typhoon aircraft operating over Libya have been self-targeting GPSguided Raytheon Enhanced Paveway II bombs, according to a UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman.However, the UK Typhoon force has yet to self-designate Enhanced Paveway II in laser mode, but the spokesman said on 5 May that some RAF Typhoon pilots deployed to Gioia Del Colle airbase in Italy to participate in NATO's Operation 'Unified Protector' were "now current" to drop air-to-ground weapons in both modes."The capability exists [for laser self-designation] but the opportunity to use it has not arisen yet," said the spokesman. The first attacks using self-targeting of GPS-guided Enhanced Paveways took place during a seven-minute "window" early on the morning of 18 April during a UK strike on Libyan communications systems by a force of RAF Typhoons and Panavia Tornado GF.4s as well as Raytheon Tomahawk land-attack missiles fired from the Royal Navy Trafalgar-class attack submarine HMS Triumph.The attack took place after the RAF pilots completed a 10-day work-up period to regain currency using the Israeli-made Rafael Litening pod to guide Enhanced Paveway II weapons onto ground targets. The routine currency training of the RAF Typhoon force in the air-to-ground role had been discontinued in 2008 as an economy measure.
