The 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier departed the US Navy base at Norfolk, Virginia, on 11 May at the start of its maiden combat deployment. USS George H W Bush (CVN 77) sailed as flagship of a carrier strike group consisting of five ships bound for Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean. Accompanying the 102,000-ton carrier are the Ticonderoga-class cruisers USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and USS Anzio (CG 68) and the Arleigh Burkeclass destroyers USS Truxtun (DDG 103) and USS Mitscher(DDG 57). ;The dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the 1990s saw the majority of its platforms grounded. Many blamed this downturn on the military's incursion into politics and, since the military transferred power to elected civilian authorities in 1999, the fortunes of the NAF have improved. "Thank God for democracy. Now that we are in a democracy we have gained an increase in our aircraft holding," Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar, Nigeria's Chief of Air Staff, told Jane's. He has every reason to be positive. Despite budgetary constraints, an increasing number of the grounded platforms are being reintroduced into service while new aircraft are being acquired. To this end, certain platforms are being upgraded abroad while others are being indigenously modified by Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL: a subsidiary of the NAF.
