Spanish defence exports fell for the first time in a decade in 2010, according to a report to be presented to parliament on 8 June by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The report states that the value of all defence materiel sold abroad was down by 16 per cent from the 2009 peak to EUR1.12 billion (USD 1.6 billion). This brought to an end 10 years of continual growth that had seen exports rise from EUR139 million to EUR1.34 billion, boosted by a 44 per cent year-on-year leap in 2009. However, shipments only corresponded to about half of the licences approved by the government, which are equivalent in value to more than EUR2.2 billion. This has led analysts to predict a prompt return to renewed growth in the coming years.
