Maintaining a ceaseless operational tempo on a broad front along with a switch to small unit tactics were key (actors in the Sri Lankan military's victory over the Tamil Tiger guerrillas, a formation commander told an international counterinsurgency seminar that began on 31 May in Colombo. Specially trained small infantry groups were the leading combat elements of army formations - division-sized battle groups of infantry and supporting arms - in the three-year campaign that finally defeated the Tigers in May 2009 after more than 30 years of conflict.
