India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CSS), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the USD4.1 billion procurement of 10 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft on 6 June to enhance the Indian Air Force's (lAFs) strategic lift capability. The C-17s are being acquired via the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route for delivery between 2013-15. It is New Delhi's largest defence deal with Washington, eclipsing New Delhi's USD2.1 billion procurement of eight Boeing P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft in January 2009 and the USD962 million acquisition of six Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft in March 2008.
