Burwell Bell, commander of US Forces Korea from 2006 to 2008, believes the US should abandon diplomatic efforts to resume nuclear talks with North Korea and instead establish an aggressive military containment strategy against Pyongyang. "We should put on the shelf any kind of dialogue with the North as long as Kim Jong-il is alive," the retired four-star general said in Seoul on 14 June: a day on which South Korea established a defence command intended to better protect its five front-line islands in the West Sea (Yellow Sea), which have been the site of a series of skirmishes with North Korea in recent years. Seoul also plans to deploy several attack helicopters to Baengnyeong island, off which the corvette ChonAn sank in March 2011. In April Jane's reported that South Korea was planning to sign a contract by October 2012 to acquire 36 attack helicopters. Seoul has previously said it would like to procure Boeing AH-64D Longbow Apaches, although the Bell AH-1Z Super Cobra (Viper) and Eurocopter Tiger will also compete.
