Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak visited China on 12 June in the latest effort to move Israel's relationship with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) forward. Although the US-enforced policy preventing Israel from selling military equipment to China remains in place, the consensus among Israeli defence and military officials is that, by emphasising common interests and co-operation, Israel could persuade China to cut its ties with Iran. US opposition to Israeli sales of military hardware to China resulted in the cancellation in 2000 of a USD1.2 billion contract for Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI's) Phalcon airborne early-warning systems. In 2004, when the US learnt that IAI intended to provide spare parts for Harpy anti-radar loitering weapons sold to China in 1999, Israel was forced to confiscate the Harpy systems and terminate all defence contracts with China.
