The US government has approved the sale of military land systems and cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) scheme in a deal valued at almost USD1 billion, the US Department of Defense (DoD) Defense Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 13 June. The three announcements - which indicate approval as opposed to a concluded sale -included two packages of General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs - valued at USD263 million and USD350 million respectively) and Textron's CBU-105D/B Sensor-Fuzed Weapons (worth up to USD355 million). Saudi Arabia is Washington's largest customer of military materiel under the FMS system, with accords valued at USD79.5 billion announced between 1950 and 2009. The larger of the two LAV announcements is related to a Saudi Arabian National Guard requirement. Valued at USD350 million, it covers: 25 LAV-25 series units; eight LAV assault guns; eight LAV anti-tank vehicles; six LAV mortar carriers; two LAV recovery vehicles; 24 LAV command and control vehicles; three LAV personnel carriers; three LAV ammunition carriers; one LAV engineer vehicle; two LAV ambulances; AN/VRC-90E and AN/VRC-92E exportable Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems and related equipment and training provision. The prime contractors will be GDLS (Canada), Raytheon, Harris and ITT. The order is notable for its scale, pointing to sufficient equipment to equip a battalion.
