The United States and the Philippines began 11 days of naval exercises in the South China Sea on 28 June: a week after Manila said the US was duty-bound to protect the Philippines' interests in the Spratly islands. The US Seventh Fleet is sending about 800 US Navy (USN) sailors to take part in Exercise 'CARAT Philippines 2011', Seventh Fleet spokesman Lieutenant Anthony J Falvo told Jane's. "Participating units include the guided missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS Howard (DDG 83), diving and salvage ship USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50)... P-3C Orion and SH-60 Seahawk aircraft" and support crews and ships, Lt Falvo said.
