The Shaanxl Y-9, the long-awaited replacement for the Shaanxl Y-8 medium-lift transport aircraft and the latest reworking of the Soviet-era AntonovAn-12, has been photographed at the airfield of the China Flight Test Establishment (CFTE), indicating that test flights are under way.The Y-8X concept, a 30-ton payload medium transport precursor to the Y-9, emerged at the 2002 Zhuhai Airshow. Officials there told Jane's that the Y-8X was intended to compete with the Lockheed Martin C-130J.By the 2005 Beijing Airshow the Y-8X concept had become the Y-9 concept: a 20-ton-payload transport powered by four 5,100 shaft horsepower WJ-6C turboprops. A brochure credited the Y-9 with a range of more than 4,200 km, a 98-troop capacity and the ability to make a single drop of up to 8.2 tons. The latter is the reported weight of the ZBD-03 airborne infantry fighting vehicle used by People's Liberation Army (PLA) mechanised airborne units.However, the PLA sidelined this Y-9 concept and Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation instead applied improvements developed for the transport version of the Y-9 to a series of airborne early warning and control, signals intelligence and electronic warfare (EW) variants that emerged from 2005 to 2006.In 2005 officials from Ukraine's Antonov told Jane's they had been retained as design consultants for transports being developed by Shaanxi and the X'ian Aircraft Company. Antonov's expertise was needed for the design of the new wing and for the new composite material fuselage. Both featured on the EW versions but the new Y-9 also features a rear loading ramp.
