South Korea's defence procurement agency has confirmed that Russia's Sukhoi T-50 (PAK-FA) fifth-generation stealth fighter is a surprise candidate to be the Republic of Korea Air Force's (RoKAFs) next-generation fighter (FX) aircraft.The Defense Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) said on 20 July that Russia's military export agency Rosoboronexport lodged its interest in bidding for the USD7 billion contract earlier in 2011 and will compete against the Boeing F-15SE Silent Eagle, Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and the Eurofighter Typhoon.The programme represents the third phase (FX-III) of the RoKAF's FX programme. Under the first and second phases, the RoKAF ordered 61 Boeing F-15K aircraft. Under FX-III, the RoKAF is expected to procure 40 to 60 aircraft to replace the McDonnell Douglas F-4s and Northrop F-5s currently in service.In a statement announcing the four contenders, DAPA indicated that industrial participation as well as modern combat aircraft capabilities will be key factors in its selection process, which it previously stated will be concluded by October 2012 with a view to taking deliveries from 2016.
