The US Navy's next chief of naval operations (CNO) has told legislators that 10 years of under-funding have left the fleet "on the edge" of readiness and warned that further large budget cuts could prevent the service from meeting its maintenance goals. "I can't tell you for sure if we're at an inflection point or a tipping point, but I don't see how we can sustain this pace of operations indefinitely and meet readiness standards," Admiral Jonathan Greenert, the current vice CNO, told the House of Representatives' Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness on 26 July. Adm Greenert said that proposed defence spending cuts - which could range from USD400 billion-plus to more than USD800 billion in the next five to 10 years - would require a drastic rethinking of the responsibilities the navy could reasonably be expected to undertake.
