Four top Turkish commanders resigned on 29 July in protest at the arrest of more than 250 serving and retired officers charged with planning to overthrow the government. The chief of the general staff, General Isik Kosaner, was joined in resignation by Navy Forces Commander Admiral Esref Ugur Yigit, Land Forces Commander General Erdal Ceylanoglu and Air Forces Commander General Hasan Aksay.
