The Israel Defence Force (IDF) is seeking a major boost to its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in a wide-ranging upgrade plan. In the plan, currently under review by the IDF General Staff and expected to come into effect in late 2011, the Israel Air Force (IAF) will receive a budget to purchase at least one new Gulfstream G550 'Shavit' electronic mission aircraft. These aircraft search for, intercept, locate, analyse and monitor ground-based and airborne electronic/signal emissions. Three Shavit aircraft were purchased by the IAF in 2003 and reportedly saw action in Israel's war against Hizbullah in Lebanon in 2006 and the offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in December 2008 and January 2009.
