The Russian military will deploy a new short-range air defence (SHORAD) surface-to-air missile (SAM) system in the next couple of years, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on 15 August. Former chief designer of Almaz-Antei corporation Igor Ashurbeili said that development of the Morfey SHORAD system had received sufficient funding to enter service in 2013. Designed as an ultra short-range point-defence system, the Morfey system has been in development since 2007. With a range of 5km, it will be used as a last line of defence against precision-guided attacks on high-value locations.
