Research and development drives tomorrow's technology, and BAE Systems spends a considerable sum in this area. Some R&D work looks at the longer-term future, helping to define the battlespace of years from now. For instance, in the future vehicle arena BAE Systems has undertaken studies to identify key technologies, and to instigate a number of concept programmes. Many of these focus on modularity, autonomous operation and signature management An example of the latter is a 'sweating vehicle' concept, in which water exhausted from the propulsion system could be used to cool the vehicle's skin.
