Brazil's government has released BRL45 million (USD28 million) in funds for the army's ASTROS 2020 (Artillery Saturation Rocket System) project. Local company Avibras Indiis-tria Aerospacial SA will use the funding to develop an enhanced version of the ASTROS II wheeled multiple-launch rocket system for the service. The Ministry of Defence said that the programme - set for completion in 2016 - is worth up to BRL1.09 billion forthe acquisition of three batteries: a total of 49 vehicles to be delivered to the army. ASTROS 2020 includes a digitised command-and-control suite, navigation and communications systems, as well as the ability to launch legacy rockets and the AV-TM long-range guided tactical cruise missile.
