The Syrian government's crackdown on reformist protesters intensified with a military offensive on 7 September in the central city of Horns, launched in response to the continuing defection of forces from loyalist ranks. Syria's deliberate isolation from diplomacy continued in parallel, following the decision to annul a planned visit from senior Arab League officials who were to present a power-sharing plan that would take the country to 2014 elections. Even Damascus' lone ally, Iran, called for dialogue instead of bloodshed: a plea that is likely, as with all that have come before, to go unheeded.
