The market for upgrading Soviet-designed air defence systems is developing into a thriving competition, with the competiton on strong display at Poland's Miedzynarodowy Salon Przemyshi Obronnego (MSPO -International Defence Industry Exhibition), which was held in Kielce from 5-8 September Western companies, former member states of the Warsaw Pact and former Soviet republics are all trying to carve a niche in this market. Three main surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems are the focus of most of these efforts: the S-125 Pechora (SA-3 'Goa'), 2K12 Kub (SA-6 'Gainful') and 9K33 Osa (SA-8 'Gecko'). Several of the companies at MSPO were showing their plans for upgrading these SAMs, which in general involve two major modifications to the platform.
