South Korea has purchased a batch of Spike NLOS (non line-of-sight) battlefield missiles from Israel's Rafael, a Ministry of National Defence (MND) official has told Jane's. "We have made a contract to procure the Spike NLOS with the manufacturer," the official said on 7 September. News of the sale was first reported by Yonhap news agency, citing unnamed MND sources. Up to 67 Spike NLOS missiles could be deployed on Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong islands in the West Sea (Yellow Sea) by the end of 2011, the MND official confirmed. Both islands are close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL): the unofficial maritime border between North and South Korea that has seen repeated clashes between the two countries.
