Thailand has finalised a deal with Ukraine to procure 49 Oplot main battle tanks (MBTs) to replace the Royal Thai Army's (RTA's) ageing US-made M41 light tanks. The order, which could double in size over the next few years, consolidates Ukraine's recently attained position as one of Thailand's favoured military suppliers - and marks the first design sale of the Oplot. Officials from Ukraine's state arms exporter, Ukrspetsexport, and Thailand's Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed the Oplot contract on 1 September in Kiev. The deal was confirmed by a statement issued by Ukrspetsexport.
