Newly disclosed images confirm the existence of a version of the Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation (SAC) Y-8/Y-9 medium transport aircraft that has been adapted by the Chinese company into a maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). Referred to as the Y-8Q or Y-8GX6, this is the latest version of the 'Category IIP platform that uses a redesigned wing and pressurised fuselage with composite structures (completed with the assistance of the Antonov Corporation), WJ-6C turboshaft engines and six-bladed propellers. This design also forms the basis for the Y-9 transport that was first revealed in 2005 but which only entered production in the past 12 months. Long awaited by analysts since SAC started developing 'New High' special-mission versions of the Y-8 medium transport, this new version appears to be distinguished by a large chin-mounted sea-search radar, an electro-optical system aft of the nose wheel and an ordnance bay just in front of the main wheels.
