US Navy (USN) Secretary Ray Mabus has followed through on his pledge to create a domestic biofuels market with the largest single biofuels procurement in the country's history: a USD12 million contract to provide more than 1.7 million litres of drop-in fuels for the navy's 'Great Green Fleet' - a carrier strike group that will be demonstrated in mid-2012 during the biannual RIMPAC naval exercise. The contract, announced on 5 December, was awarded to Dynamic Fuels LLC (a 50:50 joint venture between Tyson Foods Inc and Syntroleum Corp), which will supply biofuels derived from used cooking oils. California-based Solazyme is to assist in fulfilling the contract by supplying advanced algal biofuels. The fuels will be refined at Dynamic Fuels' renew able fuels plant at Geismar in Louisiana, which began operating in early November 2010, and are scheduled for delivery to the navy in May 2012.
