Australia to buy additional Chinooks Australia is in the process of purchasing two Boeing CH-47D Chinooks to replace the one lost in Afghanistan in May and to enlarge its fleet of the heavy-lift helicopters to seven. Defence Minister Stephen Smith said that the two new helicopters are expected to arrive in Townsville, Queensland, by the end of January 2012 and are anticipated to be ready for domestic operations by mid-2012. As the CH-47D is no longer in production, the ADF will in all likelihood receive ex-US Army models that are being phased out as the US commissions the CH-47F.
