Thailand has approved in principle the funding of two key fighter programmes for the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF): the procurement of a second batch of six Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft and the mid-life upgrade of Lockheed Martin F-16A/Bs.rnPanitan Wattanayagorn, official spokesman of the Thai government, told Jane's on 27 January that the Gripen purchase has been allocated THB 16.27 billion (USD492 million), while the upgrade of an initial six F-16s will receive THB6.9 billion. Funding for both is expected to commence in Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11), which begins on 1 October 2010.
