The Spanish Navy is currently undergoing a risk-reduction and viability study of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) combat aircraft with a view to joining the programme "at the first stage of production", the service's chief told Jane's on 15 February.rnChief of the Naval Staff Admiral Manuel Rebollo Garcia said that, with the navy's 16 McDonnell Douglas/BAE VA.2 (EAV-8B Harrier II/Plus) aircraft due to retire in 2020, "the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter is the only option available [to replace them]".
