A US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) assessment of the current state of Taiwan's air force shows that although on paper Taipei currently has some 400 combat aircraft, the actual number of "operationally capable" aircraft is "far fewer".rnThe report, which was delivered to the US Congress on 16 February, says that over half of Taiwan's 60 F-5E/F fighters "have reached the end of their operational service life", while "high maintenance costs" and a "lack of spare parts" for the island's 56 Mirage 2000-5 fighters "adversely affects their operational readiness rate".
