The Christian-Liberal majority on the parliamentary budget committee has requested German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg to reassess the necessity of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) for the country's air defence needs. The reassessment would include evaluating whether the country's requirement could be covered by upgrading the Patriot system already used by Germany. Availability, costs and current operational requirements would be the criteria used to judge whether the Patriot should receive an extension of its service in Germany.
