The Mexican Navy is interested in acquiring 12 to 15 new Mil Mi-171V helicopters, Jane's has learned. So far the navy has acquired 23 Mi-17-type aircraft in four batches: eight in 1994, eight in 1996, two in 2002 and five in 2005. Around 20 remain in service.rnThe Venezuelan National Solivarian Militia, a citizen and reserve organisation created to enhance the armed forces' capabilities, has announced its expansion into the naval domain. On 1 March the Venezuelan parliament drafted a proposal to create the Naval Bolivarian Militia, which will comprise fishermen armed with small arms and light weapons. The fishermen, unlike the recently created peasant militia, have asked the government to supply the weapons and permits allowing them to constantly carry weapons.
