The temporary moratorium announced by the US State Department on new export licences submitted by BAE Systems and the company's recent settlement with the US Department of Justice (DoJ) have the potential to "undercut the whole basis" of the proposed US/UK Defence Trade Co-Operation Treaty, a former senior US export control official has told Jane's.rnIt emerged at the start of March that the temporary suspension had been imposed on new export licence applications put forward by BAE Systems in the United States. This followed BAE Systems' submission of a guilty plea with the DoJ over charges relating to its international trading. The settlement between BAE Systems and the DoJ included an agreement under which the former will pay a USD400 million penalty.
