US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates warned allies against drastic drawdowns in active-duty troops, urging them to first cut overhead costs and less essential programmes, during a news conference in London on 8 June.rnThe US defence budget is also under extreme pressure, with Gates seeking to curb spending on futuristic weapon systems to ensure funding remains available for personnel and equipment needed for the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
